A classical music
lover’s dream come true: six great cities and seven of the
greatest orchestras in the world—the Berlin Philharmonic,
Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Vienna
Philharmonic, Orchestra de Paris, Opera national de Paris
and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Not to mention optional
operas in London, Paris, Vienna and Berlin, plus elegant
hotels and lavish meals at the very best restaurants (with
superb wine) in each city. All of this in one thirteen night
tour—truly the musical trip of a lifetime.
London is one
of the world’s most vital and exciting cities. Its tapestry
of cultures is evidenced in its cuisine, shops, music and
colourful festivals. Despite a population of over seven
million, more than 30 percent of London is made up of parks
and green space, greater than any other city of its size
in the world. This space provides the perfect opportunity
for walks and relaxation during leisure time. We include
several brief and informative guided (private) tours in
and around the city, including a city overview, a tour of
the National Gallery, and a tour of the Royal Albert Hall.
Here we attend a performance by the London Philharmonic
Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Glyndebourne Festival
Opera.
April in Paris...what
could be better? What if we included an elegant hotel in
the Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in depth tours at the Louvre
and Versailles, unforgettable meals, a performance of Satie
and Stravinsky at the Orchestra de Paris and Il barbiere
di Siviglia at L'Opéra de la Bastille? That’s better.
Many
claim the “City of Music” moniker as their own, but in our
estimation, Vienna is without peer in this regard. The city
boasts a musical heritage with close associations to the
greatest composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert,
Brahms, Johann Strauss Sr., Schönberg), as well as some
of the greatest artists (Klimt, Schiele) and thinkers (Freud,
The Vienna Circle) in history. It continues to be a cultural
beacon, and today it is home to no less than three opera
companies, a renowned Boys' Choir and a number of outstanding
orchestras. The most famous of these, the Vienna Philharmonic,
we will have the pleasure of hearing in one of the most
revered of venues, the Musikverein.
Berlin is the
most changed and changing city in Europe, perhaps in the
world. This city has reinvented itself, more than once,
over the last nine centuries. The devastation it suffered
during WWII and the subsequent division of the city during
the Cold War have left their marks. But the city retains
a spirit of vibrancy and creativity that must be experienced.
We will explore the cultural highlights and hear the renowned
Berlin Philharmonic in its landmark home with Daniel Barenboim
conducting.
Leipzig is the
birthplace of Bach and Mendelssohn, the city where Goethe
studied (and drank at the Auerbach’s Keller), and home to
the Gewandhaus and its Gewandhausorchester, one of the world’s
finest.
Dresden, completely
destroyed by Allied bombing during WWII, has been painstakingly
restored in recent decades. The Frauenkirche, Zwinger Palace,
Semperoper and many other historic gems have been rebuilt
brick by brick. We will hear the famous Sächsische Staatskapelle
Dresden, founded in 1548 and now under the direction of
Fabio Luisi, in the spectacular Semperoper.
