Opera Tours

Gardens of England & Wales

May 28 – June 7, 2012

Falstaff and Salome at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, La Boheme and Tristan und Isolde at the Welsh National Opera, plus The Garsington Festival and Oxford

English landscape gardening is rooted in European landscape painting. Designers like William Kent, Humphrey Repton and Capability Brown turned gardens into works of art in their own right, bringing in their own outside influences. This tour combines the wonderful botanical treasures of the United Kingdom with seven extraordinary performances in various venues.

We will tour four excellent but very different examples of the “English Landscape Garden”; Kew Gardens in London, where you can experience the heat of the tropical rainforest and the tranquillity of the Alps, strolling from elegant East Asia to dramatic desert landscapes. Abbey House Gardens near Bath which houses the country’s largest private collection of roses and double herbaceous borders that rival Monets. We also visit the Aberglasney Gardens, set in the beautiful Tywi valley of Carmarthenshire and the National Botanic Garden of Wales outside Cardiff.

We will have the rare opportunity of attending two performances at Covent Garden, Falstaff and Salome, as well as Tristan und Isolde and La bohème at the Welsh National Opera.

Finally, at the Garsington Festival at its new home on the Wormsley Estate in Oxfordshire, we will see Don Giovanni and a rare staging of Vivaldi's L'Olimpiade.

Also included are private guided tours of the most interesting historic sites in each city, including Cardiff Castle, Caerphilly Castle, Tintern Abbey, Blenheim Palace and Oxford University. As always, we will enjoy stellar cuisine along the way, with a carefully selected itinerary of acclaimed restaurants and hidden local gems discovered during our previous trips.
