Opera Tours

Festive London & Edinburgh

December 23, 2012 - January 2, 2013

In London: one performance at the Royal Opera House, West End theatre, concerts at Wigmore Hall & St. Martin-in-the-Fields, plus private tours and Tea at the Savoy plus the landmark Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, with Holyrood House, Edinburgh Castle and the Scotland’s legendary Hogmanay New Year's celebration

Yes, London will host the Olympics in the summer of 2012, but each winter it is the perennial host of the quintessential Victorian Christmas. As is well documented in music, literature, art and cinema, the English have always embraced Christmas with a mixture of joy, reverence and nostalgia. Nothing could better serve to put one in the spirit of the season than a stroll through the colored lights of the Covent Garden Christmas Market, or perhaps a visit to the imposing Norwegian Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square,or hearing the joyful strains of carolers in a nearby Abbey. The excellent accommodations, performances, tours, meals and sundry surprises that we have arranged for our second Christmas tour to London will serve as frosting on a very delicious Christmas cake (or figgy pudding).

At the Royal Opera House, a seven minute walk from our hotel, we will attend one performance (TBA) with a special dinner at the opera house.  We will also attend special concerts at St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Wigmore Hall. In addition to a city tour that traces the evolution of central London over the centuries, we will also be stepping off the beaten path to visit the Geffrye Museum of Interior Décor, the Foundling Museum and, in this the 200th year of his birth, the Dickens Museum.

Our home in London will be the deluxe Covent Garden Hotel, located directly at Seven Dials in the heart of the West End, and as always, we will enjoy excellent cuisine and wine at some of the city’s finest restaurants.

In Edinburgh, we stay at the landmark Balmoral (now a Rocco Forte hotel) in the heart of the city off the Royal Mile.  While here, we drink in the city's rich and regal history, with visits to Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood House and a thorough exploration of the Old Town...and of the distillate nectars known to these parts.  New Year's Hogmanay celebrations provide a festive and fitting end to our tour.

Monday, December 24 London

Upon arrival at either Heathrow or Gatwick, you will be met and transferred to the luxurious Covent Garden Hotel in London’s West End, close to the Royal Opera, Soho, Trafalgar Square and many of the city’s most important sites. Following check-in, time to rest before a delightful orientation tour by coach with our guide, Christine Hoodith. In the evening we meet for a Christmas Eve Reception in the hotel’s cozy Drawing Room.  The fireplace sets the tone for an intimate, festive evening.

Tuesday, December 25 London

Christmas Day morning is at leisure, so that you may observe the holiday in your own fashion.  In the evening we meet for a relaxed and luxurious Christmas Dinner at the hotel's Brasserie Max dining room.

Wednesday, December 26 London

After breakfast we depart on a private coach and walking tour of central London’s historic sites, including Trafalgar Square, Downing Street and Westminster Abbey, followed by Tea at the Savoy. In the evening we will attend a concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields (TBA).

Thursday, December 27 London

This morning we offer a self-directed tour (entrance included) at the National Gallery, one of the world's largest and most significant collections of European art from the 13th to 19th centuries.  This evening we gather in the lobby and make the short walk to the Royal Opera House for a performance (TBA). We enjoy dinner at the opera house beforehand.

Friday, December 28 London - Edinburgh

Today we check out and depart for Edinburgh by 1st Class rail.  Upon arrival, transfer to The Balmoral, a landmark hotel with a privileged position in the historic centre of the city.  We have time to settle into our rooms and rest before our private tour at the Palace of Holyroodhouse (once it is closed to the general public).  Holyroodhouse stands elegantly at the bottom of Edinburgh’s characterful Royal Mile. This sumptuous Baroque palace serves as the official residence in Scotland of The Queen and is used by the Royal Family for State ceremonies.  The palace is integral to Scottish history and is best known as the home of Mary Queen of Scots, with some of the most dramatic episodes of her turbulent reign occurring here. Mary was twice married in the Abbey and, in her private apartments, witnessed the brutal killing of her secretary Rizzio by her jealous second husband, Lord Darnley.  The palace also served briefly as Bonnie Prince Charlie’s headquarters during the 1745 Jacobite uprising.  Following the tour, we enjoy dinner at one of our favourite Old Town restaurants.

Saturday, December 29 Edinburgh

Itinerary to be determined.

Sunday, December 30 Edinburgh

This morning we offer an orientation tour (coach and walking) of Edinburgh, including the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town.  The afternoon is at leisure and this evening, you can witness (or join!) the opening event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay -- the spectacular Torchlight Procession, in which thousands of torch carriers create a river of fire from the Royal Mile to the Son et Lumière, with a fireworks finale on Calton Hill.

Monday, December 31 Edinburgh

Enjoy the entire day at leisure. In the evening we will gather for a performance at either the Royal Lyceum Theatre or a concert by the Edinburgh Chamber Orchestra (TBA) before a festive New Year's dinner at the hotel.
